Named for its coastal location, Surf City was chartered in 1949 and is the largest of the three Island towns, with a year round population of approximately 1,400. Linked to the mainland by a swing bridge, which usually opens on the hour to allow boats to pass through the channel, it is situated on highways 210 and 50 and is our only town that spans both Pender and Onslow counties. Governed by a council-manager form of government, the council consists of a mayor and five councilmen, who appoint a town manager.
Home to the Island's only stop light, Surf City is considered Topsail Island 's commercial real estate center and is home to many restaurants, unique shops, and nightclubs, as well as two supermarkets. It is the Island 's fastest growing real estate market and has seen an increase in the construction of quality homes and the addition of several new businesses, including two boat storage facilities.
Surf city boasts more than 30 public beach accesses, ranging from a simple access to an access with restroom facilities. The town's recent addition of a Soundside park, adjacent to the swing bridge, provides public boat ramps, playground and picnic areas. A playground accompanied by a parking area and restrooms is located at the north end of Surf City , on Broadway Avenue . A playground complete with a basketball court and a picnic area can be found at its family park on South Topsail Drive, while one of the Island's three operating oceanfront piers can be found on South Shore Drive, just past the traffic light. With the completion of Phase II before Spring 2005, bike paths will have been constructed from the “S” curve north to the Surf City-North Topsail Beach town line. Sidewalks have been installed from the “S” curve south to the Surf City-Topsail Beach town line.
The town plays host to the Surf and Turf Triathlon the fourth Saturday in April, Kiwanis' Sun Fest takes place the weekend preceeding Memorial Day, and a grand fireworks display takes place at the Soundside Park on July 3 and a Christmas tree lighting in November or December.
